6. Awesome Possum

Not all failed gaming mascots are inherently bad, but then there are legitimately trash-tier attempts like Awesome Possum. 

Introduced in his single 1993 game Awesome Possum... Kicks Dr. Machino's Butt, Awesome Possum was a shameless facsimile of Sonic, right down to the fact that the irksome marsupial faces off against a Robotnik/Eggman-esque mad scientist, Dr. Machino.

But even were Awesome Possum a half-way charming Sonic knock-off - and he isn't - the game itself is an absolute chore to play. 

From the atrociously unstable framerate through to the hamfisted environmentalist messaging - even forcing you to do mid-game quizzes on the subject - this is an ugly and uninspired excursion.

Hell, even Awesome Possum's digitized vocal dialogue - a genuinely novel feature for the time - fell flat because everything that came out of his mouth was agony to listen to.

The market thankfully listened, and no further attempts were made to make this monstrosity a thing.
