8 Popular Video Games That Need To Go Back To Their Roots

3. Assassin's Creed

Granted, Assassin's Creed has definitely rediscovered its footing in recent years. Origins and Odyssey were both hailed as fresh and interesting takes on the franchise's systems that meshed RPG mechanics together with the core experience of the original games.

However, there's another area of the franchise that could definitely do with reflecting on the series' roots.

The first Assassin's Creed was a simple game. You played an Assassin in an authentic, beautifully recreated interpretation of the Holy Lands during the Third Crusade. There was no overabundance of mini-map icons, a small selection of collectables and gameplay that consisted of tracking down a target and killing them.

Cut to modern Assassin's Creed and you'll see that every game features an abundance of boring side-missions, useless collectables and fetch quests as far as the eye can see. While the new Assassin's Creed games have got the gameplay down, it'd be nice to see them go back to the simpler nature of AC's first entry.

Bigger doesn't always mean better, and Assassin's Creed has always been the purest example of that fact. Putting time into a small handful of side content that's actually rewarding and significant is the final step Ubisoft need to make if they want to see Assassin's Creed find new life once more.
