8 Precise Video Game Moments You Knew You Were Utterly Screwed

8. Stealing From The Shopkeeper - Legend Of Zelda: Link's Awakening

So I don't know if this even needs to be said, but stealing, unless under dire circumstances is pretty much universally agreed to be wrong, yet as video games are basically a freefall into the abyss of "what if?" a lot of titles let you hoover up heirlooms and personal possessions like mad.

And Hero of Time Link is no exception to this, routinely entering houses and smashing belongings for the few rupees hidden within like he's an overzealous tax man working for The Sheriff of Nottingham. Therefore you'd think that his pockets would be swollen enough that he wouldn't need to resort to stealing larger, more valuable items, right?

Well in Link's Awakening the player is given the option to carry one item out from the shops dotted around the world and make off with the prize free of charge! At first, this might appear to be a glitch, but as soon as the player emerges from the shop, a barrage of text reminding players of their thieving ways rings out.

At that moment, players knew they'd screwed up. Making matters worse is that if a pang of conscience provokes the pickpocket in you to repent, you're met with a lightning-based death as the shopkeeper fries you like a microwave!

Brutal.
