Expectations and hype make or break most games. While recently we're seeing out of nowhere titles completely dominate - your Fall Guys', your Among Us' - the majority of bigger budget games put millions of dollars into sizeable cross-media advertising campaigns, then essentially sit back and hope for the best.
Obviously we all have endless examples of being disappointed or misled, but what about the opposite? What about genuinely surprising efforts that didn't necessarily come out of nowhere, but left you feeling impressed; as though you haven't got this crazy industry we call gaming all figured out?
What about those times you went into a game thinking you knew exactly what was coming - only to be pleasantly surprised?
Those are the real rarities, especially if you've grown up alongside gaming from at least the early 2000s, as it takes quite a lot to impress us at this stage.
