As if the world of Counter-Strike's online marketplace wasn't crazy enough, Runescape throws its party hat into the ring, to do one better.

Because online digital storefronts for items you can't put a physical, tangible "quality" to, makes them valuable in-game to the measure of our collective imaginations.

In Runecape's case, something that started in 2001 as a fun Xmas giveaway - Christmas Cracker items you could use on other players to receive Partyhats - only became ludicrously valuable through rarity over time.

Today, Partyhats are listed on the game's "Grand Exchange" trade network for multiple billions of in-game gold, simply because developer Jagex didn't continue their distribution after that first year.

The supposed "junk" item has become a symbol of Runescape's elite; of those who were there at the beginning, and who stuck to their guns never trading for all this time.
