8. Kessler - Infamous

Kessler from Infamous is a very special case indeed - a shadowy antagonist who directly opposes protagonist Cole, and yet is ultimately revealed to be a secret hero in the most literal sense imaginable.

Infamous' big, climactic twist is that Kessler is Cole - or to be more precise, Kessler is another version of Cole from an alternate future. 

In this future, Cole failed to prevent a malevolent force called The Beast from destroying humanity, including Cole's own family. 

And so, in a last ditch effort to make things right, he sent himself back in time and took up the villainous mantle of Kessler in order to ensure that present day Cole would be prepared to battle The Beast when he later arrived.

Granted, Kessler carries out some genuinely heinous, arguably unforgiveable acts in an attempt to train Cole for what's coming, but at the same time, can he really be an enemy when he's just another version of Cole, the hero? Talk about a noodle-baker alright.
