New Horizons came out in March 2020, just as the COVID-19 pandemic was causing lockdowns and stay-at-home orders around the globe. 

And so, the game served as something of a social substitute for many who couldn't go outside or see friends. This, combined with its cozy style, helped soothe players struggling with such a challenging period.

As a result, New Horizons went on to sell an outrageous 47.44 million units, far eclipsing the combined sales of every other game in the series.
