The notion that gamers are physically unable to detach themselves from digital realms for long enough to put nourishment into their bodies is a long-standing one - and not exactly untrue, if the piles of Doritos and Mountain Dew bottles are anything to go by. Hey, we've all been there, this is a judgement free zone.
Who hasn't been excited from the thought of being able to order actual, real person food whilst you're wandering the mountain tops of the fairy kingdom, or deep underwater battling eels from the void? Stopping at a merchant for ten health potions and a real life burger is a fantasy we all want to live, no matter how ridiculous. And the outside world knows it, too.
Cue World of Warcraft taking the peanuts with Pandaren Express, the Chinese takeaway you can feast upon whilst actually in-game. They really got it right with the tagline:
"Don't let the inconvenience of eating impede you from reaching your Maximum Gaming Potential. Order Chinese food in-game from Pandaren Xpress today!"
2019 saw Deliverune, Runescape's answer to fast food delivery company Deliveroo, letting you mix your own pizza with sword-wielding sprites until it's delivered straight to your door.
It's a cheap trick for the game obsessed and hungry, and reveals just how lazy we've become in recent years. But my god, do we need it. I'm not even mad.
