You might remember Jonathan Blow from Indie Game: The Movie, in which he bared his developer soul and divulged the true meaning of his 2D new-wave classic, Braid. Trippy, time-warping mechanics and an expressionistic, painterly art-style brought class and complexity to a narrative conceit that proved equally mature. On the PS4, Jon is busting out the third-dimension with The Witness -- an open-world island with abstract and practical puzzles built into its geographically and architecturally diverse environments. If you're still not quite sure what to make of this game, remember - it doesn't really have a modern counterpart with which to draw comparisons. Visually, The Witness evokes a more tangible version of Windwaker's cel-shaded look in an off-rails version of old PC, point-and-click, puzzle-oriented game design - kind of like Myst. Sometimes, we're in the mood for something more intellectually stimulating, and if that experience happens to be in a game world as achingly serene as The Witness', we may just quit Sudoku once and for all.
