7. Your First Randomly-Generated Boss - Crypt Of The Necrodancer

Brace Yourself Games

A truly unique little indie game, Crypt of the Necrodancer takes Hotline Miami-style synthwave tunes and asks you to tackle dungeons in time with the beat. You'll attack and dodge as the pounding music backs you up - even turning the dungeon into a dancefloor if you get a combo going - but just when you're getting the hang of things, you'll die. You'll just... die, as a couple of mistimed moves spells disaster for the enemies who'll easily team up to bash your face in.

Then there are the bosses, the first of which is always randomised. If you've even got enough health or items left behind when making it to the 'boss floor', chances are you'll be greeted with the 'You're Dead' screen immediately, as each boss takes valuable time to figure out.

This has led to the game getting quite the reputation on Steam reviews and online, as thousands of players are simply stuck at the very first zone. Its exterior and fantastic music may paint a picture of a carefree rhythm-based roguelike, but CotN will have your expectations for breakfast, before forcing you to lap them back up and try again.
