Batman Arkham Knight New Trailer: 8 Things We Learned

6. Batsignal

One of the on-going complaints that fans of DC€™s poster boy have levelled against Rocksteady€™s award-winning take on the Batman franchise has been the use of the Bat-Signal. That iconic light cutting through the darkness of Gotham€™s icy night which alerts the city€™s saviour to crime is one of the few aspects of the Batman universe which Rocksteady hasn€™t hit out of the park. In the first three instalments into the Arkham series, the uber-recognisable beam of light was used as but a marker to guide the Bat from way-point to way-point. In the trailer, once Scarecrow has finished his open-threat to Gotham, we are shown a lingering shot of the Bat-Signal cutting through a rainy skyline. Though we may be jumping to a hopeful conclusion here, is it really that unfeasible to suppose that in their final romp in Arkham, Rocksteady will finally give the Bat-Signal the treatment it deserves? The Bat-Signal could be used to fantastic effect to introduce emergent gameplay elements rather than be used to give waypoints a layer of lacquer. Imagine if the Bat-Signal was used in the same way as the dragons in Skyrim, to trigger side missions or even progress the narrative. The signal has a decent amount of airtime in the trailer so there is no reason to suppose Rocksteady hasn€™t amplified the role it plays in their blockbuster game.
