It was difficult not putting something completely cliché (not to mention already well-publicised) in this spot. But then my dog walked by and made me realise something: pets are great. And Infinity Ward has capitalised on this hypothetical situation with their latest release, Call Of Duty: Ghosts. By adding Riley The Dog the designers were able to forge an emotional bond between the player and the in-game characters that's nothing short of potentially heart-breaking. The first time you control Riley you get to rip a guy's throat out and boy, is it cathartic. Conversely the last moments spent with Riley in the campaign hurt. He almost sacrifices himself to save you. How you react is totally subjective but anger seems like an adequate response as the game forces you to carry him to rescue when he deserved his revenge. You know that when a video-game can make a player feel that deeply for nothing more than a bunch of pixels they clearly are onto something. Riley The Dog may not be the single greatest idea ever conceived but it's without a doubt one in a long-line of great decisions made by brilliant people.
