As the avid gamer that I am, I aways keen an ear to the ground for developments with upcoming titles I am interested in buying. This was the new problem off the block with Call of Duty, and how despite not being officialy released yet, many still find themselves with a copy of the game. This is problematic enough, because the servers are only put up days before, and that time is normally spent by community members giving feedback for the official rollout. However, I think this is the first time I have seen a video game actually get 'modded', prior to its actual release. The Call of Duty franchise has always been suceptible to modders, and the cycle began with Call of Duty 4. For anybody who still owns that game on a console, they would know that online multiplayer is near enough pointless as most lobbies will contain a player who has these ludicrous mods that literally destroy any chance of playing the game as intended. Any-who, I got wind of Ghosts being streamed yesterday, and I did catch a glimpse of some people playing it. Call of Duty however, were not as happy and quickly got the streams taken down for copyright infringement. Later on that very same night, I heard that the game has already been issuing bans as players had been found to be using mods, already. That just shows the amount of effort the community is willing to put in just to push the boundaries of not only the game itself, but the developers also. People are already slating the players that are doing this, but I think it is more of a 'Grey Hat' realm. By that I mean that they are indeed doing something bad, but it could easily be of benefit to the game overall. That being Infinity having the ability to quickly patch the mods, and glitches found prior to the official release. Where in any case, it could be much more problematic, not only in terms of press, but with the community overall. Call of Duty 4 & Modern Warfare 2 suffered massively because the mods that began to circulate wasn't as instantaneous, they slowly appeared after time. Infinity Ward patched the game several times, but they kept on showing, with the community getting smarter. When Modern Warfare 2 was closing in for release, IW literally abandoned the game in a relatively poor state might I say, and the infections spread like a wildfire. They have hopefully learned form that and be aiming towards a patch being rolled out within the new few days. And credit to them, those who have got mods at current have been banned almost instantaneously when trying to use them in an online lobby. Either way, it will be interesting to see how Infinity Ward deal with this setback. Got any questions? Please feel free to share and or comment on any of my articles, and what do you think? Am I making too big a deal over this, or is it going too far now?
