Ammo conversation plays a key role in staying alive while battling the zombie horde, especially in later levels, and you can do yourself a huge favour from the outset by switching to your melee knife rather than using your gun.

The zombies in the early going can be easily taken out with melee attacks as opposed to gunfire due to both their relative weakness and the scarcity of their numbers.

There's little danger of being killed as long as you're at least a mildly competent player, and while you probably won't scoop as many points as your gun-totting teammates right away, you'll make a huge saving on the ever-precious ammo.
