Death Stranding may just sound like a cool indie title, but it actually has greater meaning within the world of the game itself.

What exactly the Death Stranding is has been hinted at throughout the game's trailers so far, with dialogue from the characters sort of spelling everything out for us.

The third trailer for the game starts with Sam reminiscing about the big bang, before talking about "the next explosion", which is clearly a reference to the Death Stranding.

It's this explosion that seems to have created all of the weirdness we see in the game. Upside-down rainbows, BT's and more all seem to be an effect of the Death Stranding, and it also seems to have torn America itself apart.

Using the math from Heartman's deaths in the latest trailer, we know that the Death Stranding happened ten years ago, meaning the world has been like this for quite some time.

Although we don't quite know everything yet, we can rest easy in knowing what Death Stranding refers to.
