3. Phantom Dust Remake

In the past few years, cult games from decades ago have been getting reboots and remakes like crazy. Killer Instinct and Shadow Warrior are two fairly well known examples of successful cult game reboots. But Microsoft threw everyone for a loop when they announced a reboot of Phantom Dust, a cult game from the original Xbox. The original Phantom Dust is a unique title, developed by Microsoft Game Studios, but produced and directed by Panzer Dragoon€™s director, Yukio Futatsugi. It combined card-like sets of powers know as Arsenals with strategy and action elements to create a unique gameplay experience. Its appearance at this year€™s E3 was a total shock, because there wasn€™t even a hint that this game was in development. Not only that, but it doesn€™t fit Microsoft€™s first party identity (shooters and racing games) or its history of ignoring its old original Xbox IPs (Killer Instinct excluded). That said, it€™s practically a new IP in a year dominated by sequels, and that makes it worth people€™s attention.
