Until Elden Ring was confirmed through leaks, the title we'd heard was "Great Rune" - both of which point to some object of power that's worth tracking down.

Something of a standard, archetypal setup, we've seen "great objects of power" in everything from Lord of the Rings to One Piece, and G.R.R. Martin has long cited J.R.R. Tolkien as one of his greatest influences.

Pair with Miyazaki as a lover of deep fiction across the board, and you have a plot setup where we're traversing the lands, visiting kingdoms to better them by removing corrupted leaders, eventually becoming the "one saviour" of the realm.

Think the corrupted King Theoden in Lord of the Rings and how the Fellowship cured him of his illness, removing Saruman's poison from his mind. This lines up with things like Dark Souls 2's "battle" against the already-defeated King Vendrick, and the slow degradation/dissection of the will behind power is very much in Miyazaki's wheelhouse.

Even the game's logo shows one beam of light piercing through a collection of rings; likely representing the hero's journey through the various environments they have to visit and learn from.

Naturally you can expect way more nuance to proceedings thanks to Martin and Miyazaki co-writing everything, but conceptually, we at least have an outline for what's happening and why.
