Another day, another Fallout 4 Youtube video - but this time we got far more detail into something that's as-of-yet eluded many fans; the Perk system. Implemented in various ways across the past games, Bethesda's touting of a new system that would lock out certain players to certain SPECIAL trees - whilst also rewarding others from the beginning with high-level abilities - was confusing, to say the least. Now, in a new gameplay demo where we got to see some hands-on footage of Director Todd Howard walking us through how it all works, many things are immediately more clear. First off you have the standard seven pools (or SPECIAL skill headings), to which each will have 10 drop-down trees inside. Within THAT however, you can rank up each perk individually, to various levels, making for 70 base abilities with various tiers within, totalling 275 perks in total to customise your character. In addition, Howard noted that if you've put enough points into the requisite SPECIAL tiers, you then get early access to the upper echelons of that respective tree (so say you're level 7 for Agility, all the perks leading up to that level are open to you from the get-go), clarifying the previous confusion around how we'd have access to high level abilities, whilst also requiring them to be levelled up from within. It might be a little confusing to read, but you'll see from the following stills it all comes together very well indeed. As such, I've compiled a screen-by-screen breakdown of everything shown so far, and being there are 15 revealed in total, let's get started.
