How this is going to work is still up for debate, but check out the above image. See the 'Superior melee damage' note on the right-hand side? It seems we're getting a dedicated melee attack for every firearm, hopefully regardless of whether you're in V.A.T.S or not. A quickfire 'melee button' has been in gaming ever since Halo decided you shouldn't have to switch to it as a separate weapon, and it's great to see Bethesda taking note of this. Crafting looks to play a part too, but whether there's a numerical value attached to your attack or not outside of labels like the aforementioned, we'll have to wait and see.
