FIFA 14 has been out for over a week now and already EAs football simulation series has proven its just as popular as last season, by outselling Grand Theft Auto 5. The long-running franchise is now into its 20th year and is showing no signs that it is going away any time soon, with a next generation version out next month. But just how much do you know about FIFA? From interesting sales stats through to the 1994 World Cup held in the US, here, we run through 7 Things You (Probably) didnt know.
7. David Platt Was First Ever Cover Star
Today's FIFA cover stars tend to be the world's best and most expensive stars, such as millionaire's Lionel Messi and Gareth Bale, who adorn the front cover of 14, the most recent in the series. No player has appeared as a cover star more times than Manchester United's Wayne Rooney, who has starred on seven consecutive titles from FIFA 06 through to FIFA 12. And the first ever player to appear on the box art of a FIFA game, 1993's FIFA International Soccer? David Platt. Platt until recently served as first team coach at Manchester City before joining rivals United earlier this year as fitness coach, and began his playing career with the latter as a youth. He later joined Arsenal after stints in Italy, winning the Premier League and FA Cup double in 1998 before retiring from the game in 2001.
