EA drip-fed their announcement of the Top 100 players in FIFA 19 this year. That was a smart strategy, one that allowed them to steadily spin out hype for the game's 28 September release more than usual and coincide with the demo's launch on PC, Xbox One and PS4 this past Thursday.

Armed with new gameplay mechanics to muck around with, gamers can clearly see the key differences between 19's top-ranked player Cristiano Ronaldo and someone like Borussia Dortmund's Marco Reus just by playing as them. Both the demo's unveiling and that Top 100 reveal have become celebrated moments for the annual series.

Celebrated and riddled with surprises.

There are bags of them on this year's list. Yes, CR7 is the number one man (again), and sure, the Top 10 collection are supposed to be the game's must-buy players, but something feels a bit off in other places. Throughout, old favourites have slid down the ladder in EA's estimations, and others are absurdly high.

Ronaldo's management might not be happy that the new Juventus star isn't out on his own at the head of the pack too...
