2. Boss Battles Are MUCH More Fleshed Out

I've covered the supremely multifaceted combat, but the place where it all clicked was going up against the hulking bosses Square Enix have redesigned for the Remake.

For the opening Guard Scorpion, no longer is it a simple fight where at some point, you have to mitigate a tail laser attack. Instead, now the Scorpion comes at you in stages, leaping around the battlefield, sticking to walls and the ceiling, then gaining distance and charging its laser, which requires you to take cover.

The iconic Airbuster duel is fleshed out through the keycard system I mentioned earlier, where you won't even fight it until you've had the opportunity to disable its most vicious attacks through a string of new areas.

Once you're in the fight, Cloud is once again separated from Barrett and Tifa, but the Airbuster flies to different parts of the environment, keeping you on your toes as it splits its into separate targets.

All-told, the combat in these sequences is incredible. You're forced to engage with every attack and item at your disposal, using teamwork, weak spots, stagger animations and everything in between to gain the upper hand.

It's so much more than just pummelling a foe with your best moves, then healing when the counterattack comes.
