GTA V: 10 Movies That Inspired The Franchise

By T.J. Barnard /

Rockstar have never been all that subtle about showing how indebted their massively popular and hugely iconic Grand Theft Auto series is to the movies. Even the most casual fans of cinema could probably point out a few of the more obvious references scattered throughout games like Vice City and San Andreas, many of which make up fairly large sections of the story. Other references, however, are implemented with a little more tact - dedicated cinephiles won't feel left out. Point is, the Grand Theft Auto games owe a lot to the cinema in general. Be it missions designed entirely around scenes from famous flicks, or gentle nods to the set design in others (replicated in pixels and programming), the guys over at Rockstar have clearly been inspired by tons of their favourite movies. Going by what we've glimpsed of the fifth installment, Grand Theft Auto V, the franchise's explicit love of the silver screen will remain a staple of the series come September... Join as as we take a look back at those movies which have inspired Grand Theft Auto in its entirety thus far, and those which you might think about checking out before the next game is unveiled (to, you know, pass the time)...
