Just Cause 3 Hands-On Review: 7 Key Impressions It's Made

1. The 'Asynchronous' Multiplayer Is Limited, But Fun

Plenty of people were disappointed when Square Enix revealed that Just Cause 3 wouldn't have a traditional multiplayer mode. PC gamers have already proved that such a feature can work, as demonstrated by the free unofficial Just Cause 2 multiplayer mod with its hectic 200-player servers. But whatever their reasoning, Square Enix has decided to keep the focus on the single-player for now. As a (sort of) compromise, Just Cause 3 features an asynchronous multiplayer mode, which entails leaderboards for the countless extreme exploits you can undertake in the game - such as long-range headshots, destroying five buildings in a short period of time, and longest flights using the wingsuit. I don't usually care for such features, but playing alongside 20 or so people at EGX, I quite enjoyed getting the info in the top right corner telling me that someone had just overtaken me in a certain leaderboard. It created side-missions on the fly, so if I saw that someone just knocked me from top spot, I'd be determined to go off and do whatever wacky task I had to do to reclaim my crown. It may not be exactly what fans were calling for, but the asynchronous multiplayer throws in a welcome competitive element to Just Cause 3, which without it would be prone to feeling a bit directionless at times.
