5. The Secret Turbo Boost Trick

An oldie but a goodie, the 'starting boost trick' has been a staple of kart games since time immemorial.

In MK8, not much has changed, but just to clarify how it's done, you need to hit and hold accelerate when the countdown number two finishes its descent, not when it first appears, otherwise you'll backfire and miss the window altogether.

Many fans have noted that a better thing to do is look at Lakitu (the lil' guy on the cloud above you), and time your button press with his second red light, or his hand coming down.

Either way, the secret to a max starting boost lies in nailing this second stage of the three-part countdown, so practice, and you'll have it down in no time.
