Staunch fans of BioWares instant-classic space RPG may care as much about Mass Effect 4s multiplayer suite as a Krogan would about a starving Salarian, but it is hard to deny that an announcement pertaining to somehow building on the surprisingly good multiplayer of Mass Effect 3 would be a well received one. We couldn't really blame ourselves for expecting the normal, dreary selection of tacked-on online game modes going into Mass Effect 3 a deathmatch, team deathmatch, king of the hill, free-for-all and capture the flag (probably given some silly names in a feeble attempt to mask their unoriginality) if we were lucky. What we got was an incredibly addictive co-op based horde mode which challenged a crack-team of you and your friends to survive wave-after-wave of enemies with the difficulty increasing with every passing minute. Far from being a tacked-on distraction from the main campaign, the multiplayer was a highly enjoyable romp in its own right which provided a pleasant break from the single player component. The announcement that the horde mode will make a return in Mass Effect 4 would be good news, as would a promise from BioWare that endeavoured to fix the network issues which at times threatened to ruin a good multiplayer mode. However, what would be a massive E3 announcement would be if Mass Effect 4 were to be made available on Steam: the first two games were, but disappointingly the third was not. If Mass Effect 4 were supported on steam, the games online community would be sure to receive a huge increase.
