It's always a concern that when a beloved franchise reaches a certain age (with MK being over 20 years old now) that it will have changed beyond all recognition. While in some cases, that can be a good thing (look at how Mario has successfully carried on into 3 dimensions and now into high definition), more often than not it can result in the memories of classic games being ruined by lacklustre modern adaptations (Sonic the Hedgehog isn't doing too well these days, is he?). Well, be thankful that NetherRealms is taking good care of the Mortal Kombat franchise. The gameplay trailer shows that the main hallmarks of the series are still present; fast, fluid combat, brutal special moves and the incomparable Fatalities. Even the traditional announcer voice over of "FIGHT" and "FINISH HIM" has made it into the 10th game with the requisite text appearing on screen, just like it always has. While the HUD isn't visible during the trailer, it's still clear that NetherRealms have been faithful to the source material and have made sure that their hit of MK9 wans't a fluke. Even from this short snippet of gameplay, it's perfectly clear that they're fans of the series and they've made sure not to deviate too far from the tried and tested recipe. It's almost guaranteed that in the coming months NetherRealm will reveal all sorts of new features and ideas they are implementing into the game, but it would seem that the core mechanics have remained the same. Hell, even Scorpion still jumps the same way he did all the way back in the first Mortal Kombat game and you don't maintain details like that if you don't love the source material.
