9. Kung Lao

I absolutely adore Kung Lao. Costar of the phenomenal MK: Shaolin Monks, Lao has forever been left in Liu Kang's shadow as far as pop culture is concerned, but NetherRealm consistently flesh out his moves so he's never just "the teleporting hat guy".

Don't get me wrong, he is every bit the teleporting hat guy too, but now we've got the ability to summon energy balls from the ancestral "Great Kung Lao" spirit, extended teleport chains, and some utterly furious punch combos that just let you wail on opponents until they're a fine paste.

Unlike MK 9's fatality saw split bodies held aloft in victory (grabbing "Has game violence gone too far?!" headlines the world over), Lao's MK 11 fatalities are more subdued, but still effortlessly stylish.
