38 Studios

Few fandoms burn with quite so much passion as Kingdoms of Amalur.

Born from one of the industry's weirdest meeting of the minds, baseball star Curt Shilling randomly decided to use his money to start a game studio, 38 Studios, asking various friends within earshot if they'd like to help.

Who were these "friends", you ask?

Why, none other than R.A. Salvatore, prolific fantasy writer and creator of the Forgotten Realms series, Ken Rolston, lead designer of The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind AND Oblivion, and Todd McFarlane, creator of Spawn, Venom and a host of other iconic characters.

What happened next involved a 75 million dollar loan and a kitchen sink approach to various dreams becoming a reality, only for the project to be overhauled, 38 Studios to go bust, and Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning to be a stellar open-world RPG that nowhere near enough people played.

THQ

Now though, it's returning as Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning, as THQ Nordic retained the IP, and are overhauling textures and game polish to create a current-gen release.

At time of writing all we know is that the project was listed on the official Xbox store (then quickly hidden), and that it's coming in "Summer".
