5. The Incredible Visual Effects

If you can deal with the aforementioned excess of fur, this film's visual effects look absolutely gorgeous, and far ahead of what most were probably expecting.

It's extremely difficult to go the "realistic" route with the Pokémon and actually pull it off, but bar a few questionable character designs, they're terrifically rendered for the most part with an eye-popping level of detail.

The Pokémon look expressive and mesh well with the human characters, as is always a worry in these sorts of movies, especially with a director as inconsistent as Letterman at the helm.

Clearly, though, it's one less thing for fans to worry about. Could a Best Visual Effects Oscar be in the movie's future? Probably not, but here's to dreaming.
