11. Yakuza Kiwami

Take note, games industry - if you're going to revisit an old classic and bring it up to speed, do it like Sega's Yakuza team.

Kiwami is a complete overhaul of the 2005 original using Yakuza 0's game engine; one that always had the most grounded story in the entire franchise, introduces its characters perfectly and now comes with a four-way fighting style that means you can break bones in style.

Back when the series was first advertised in the west its open-world template drew comparisons to GTA, though this couldn't be farther from the truth. Yakuza Kiwami's gameplay is a brawler replete with minigames; it's cutscenes having the quirk and "You were dead/alive/my brother all along!?!" of Metal Gear Solid.

It's quite the shiny eastern gem, and a truly cherishable franchise.
