Being a western, Red Dead Redemption 2 walks in the footsteps of many cinematic predecessors. Yes, there's a great deal of real history and themes interwoven throughout, but - from the stylised Spaghetti Westerns of Leone to the Anti-Westerns of Peckinpah - this game lives and breathes the Western genre.

Take the sequence where Arthur and John rob a train in the game's second chapter. The cutscene is framed almost exactly like a similar sequence from The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford, right down to Arthur positioning himself atop a toppled obstacle on the train tracks.

It's a small touch, and there'll undoubtedly be other nods to other Westerns littered throughout the game, but this one in particular is very special.
