Another character who's very status as being alive in the first game meant they'd survive no matter what, Javier still plays a key role in the gang, and even joins up with Arthur against Dutch at the close of the game.

I say "even", because he ultimately sides with Van Der Linde, walking a thin line between what's "right" in the moment, and what his morals are clearly telling him.

This somewhat carries into the original game, as an older Javier is much more jovial about the circumstances of his leaving, clashing with John over the decision he made in the moment.
