Despite faltering critical reception, the Resident Evil movie franchise was like the little engine that could (only with a lot more money behind it). The fact that it managed to keep fans by committing to a fairly simple central formula without too much deviation feels like a lesson that the game developers should have heeded themselves. It could well be that Capcom start looking to the movie franchise for even more than just tonal inspiration though. According to rumours from last year, the next game could end up being a sequel to Resident Evil: Retribution, following the continued adventures of Milla Jovovich's Alice. Her inclusion in any capacity would no doubt be welcomed by fans. While it's foolish to pin hopes on any movie tie-in in the current market, the fact that it would be a sequel and not a sloppy, rushed cash-in should please fans looking for some positives. And again, having Alice as a playable character would go a long way to distract from the sins of Resident Evil 6.
