Otherwise known as fannying around or arsing about, this Resident Evil phenomenon has been largely excluded by the later games which keep you on track. The earlier games produced a whole lot of palaver for the gamer to get through in order to advance in the game. Scenarios such as getting a lighter to burn that picture to get that gem to insert it in the statue's hand and move some mini statues to get a key were very inventive but could sometimes produce extreme rage in the gamer - wandering around a mansion, a sewer, a police station for hours on end looking for some flipping elusive coin to get you through to the next level. Code Veronica - the first half - was an extreme case of continual running around searching for objects and attendant backtracking. When I first played the original Resident Evil, I thought I would never get out of that mansion. My sense of direction is crap so I just ended up running around aimlessly for hours. By the time Resident Evil 2 came along, I got a guide.
