You can just imagine how many back n' forths the developers had over this in their respective meeting rooms - whether to intentionally include a 'squished' multiplayer component, under the assumption that various gamers will 'get' it's not a broken feature.

I for one, am glad they did - as this was just how we experienced multiplayer back in Sonic 2.

It kinda works for a head-to-head race, too; the tighter corridor focus meaning those levels that were already whizzing past at a ridiculous rate are even more challenging to nail in the moment.

Depending on critical and consumer reception, perhaps Sega will patch in a more 'in proportion' version of multiplayer, but for now, breathe in the old-school vibes.
