Well, I guess I could say a lot of things about this particular piece of iconic music. but the one thing that keeps coming to my mind is one question: Why Calypso? I can't be the only one who senses a little bit of Caribbean influence. It pervades the whole song but is most evident during the second breakdown (:55):How did such an exotic, lush, un-Japanese like melody creep into the theme music of the original Super Mario Bros. videos game? No one may ever know. Still it seems that like with many things genius has its roots in the most unexpected of places. From this unheard of combination of computer driven synth and calypso melody came the most recognizable video game theme known to man. It's the perfect relaxing foil to the frantic adventures of a fat Italian man on the go. Overall it finds a lot of its special worth in its universality: there is no country or culture, continent or island where the main Super Mario Theme would go unrecognized which is fitting since, regardless of his nationality, Mario is a heroic figure for the people. And what, I ask you, is a hero without his theme music? Did we miss your favourite Super Mario theme? Share your own picks below.
