Super Mario Maker 2 Review: 6 Ups & 3 Downs
Making Mario has never been so good.
Rating: ★★★★☆
With every Nintendo console comes the inevitable wave of first-party Mario themed exclusives, from the standard platforming adventures and mad Parties he gets up to, to days out Karting and, these days, contract building.
In other words: Mario Maker.
The first game was an underplayed hit on the Wii U, and Super Mario Maker 2 brings the seemingly limitless creativity of the previous instalment whilst expanding on it in every single way. From the slight tweaks to menus to adding completely new modes, items and gizmos, there's enough here to keep avid creators building away for years to come.
This is a platformer like no other - the community around Super Mario Maker 2 is one of the friendliest, yet most competitive out there, with players constantly challenging each other with new levels designed to push each other to the limit. And when that has the trappings of Mario, how can you not love it?
In true Nintendo fashion, however, there is the odd thing or two here that completely baffles players, again raising the question: "why do they keep doing this in 2019?"
But hey, that is the company we have all grown up with affection to regardless. We wouldn't have it any other way.
