The Witcher 4: 5 Reasons It's Coming Sooner Than You Think
CDPR's time with the franchise is far from over.
Developed by industry darlings, CD Projekt Red, The Witcher 3 is one of the greatest video games of all time.
Whilst their attention is currently focused on Cyberpunk 2077, CDPR’s main IP is the Witcher franchise. The first game was a small but ambitious title that was flawed by its technical limitations, not its creative ones.
From its limited PC release in 2007, CDPR managed to turn The Witcher 3 into one of the most recognisable video games in the world, winning the 2015 Game of the Year Award.
Many fans believed the Witcher 3: Wild Hunt to be the last of the series, and whilst Geralt’s story came to a natural conclusion, it is by no means the end of the Witcher series. CDPR are an ambitious studio, and the creative potential of the Witcher 4 is far too appealing to be ignored.
The Witcher is also never hotter than right now. The upcoming Netflix TV series has the potential to fire the Witcher franchise into mainstream media even more.
It has Netflix’s full attention and with over 150m subscribers, CDPR are well aware of the Witcher 4, meaning that as it only grows in popularity and significance the pieces will fall into place, sooner than you think.
5. The Extended Universe
As good as a sequel to Geralt’s or Ciri’s story would be, the surrounding world and lore within Andrzej Sapkowski’s universe should be explored by CDPR in a different way.
For those who do not know, the Witcher game series is not a direct representation of Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels. They in fact continue the story that finished in the books, meaning that CDPR has some experience of creating a semi-original storyline.
With CDPR’s legendary quest design and character development, an original game within the wider Witcher universe could be exceptional. The potential focus on the history of Elves within the Witcher Universe could be a powerful and interesting storyline. The beauty of Elven cities within the Witcher is eluded too, and creating the 4th Witcher game around these cities would create a truly stunning world.
CDPR should approach The Witcher 4 with a refreshing outlook, focusing on an entirely new storyline and time period of the Witcher Universe. The potential for a stunning world with an impactful storyline could ensure the Witcher 4 only builds on its predecessor, whilst not harming the legacy of The Witcher 3.
