8 Mods Better Than The Actual Game

8. Battlefield 1942: Desert Combat

Let's kick this list off with one of the most legendary gaming mods of all time - Battlefield 1942's Desert Combat.

Desert Combat was released in 2003 and set in Iraq during the first Gulf War, allowing it to introduce a bevy of more modern weapons and vehicles that simply wouldn't make sense in the base game.

This includes jets, helicopters, mobile missile launchers, and high-caliber sniper rifles and machine guns to name just a few, ensuring that Desert Combat basically injects the original multiplayer experience with a fat dose of steroids.

With a greater focus on in-air combat, Desert Combat adds a whole extra layer of strategy and mayhem, with a faster pace which means players spend less time jogging back to the action.

Studio Trauma Studios did such a great job with the mod that they were acquired by Battlefield developer DICE and collaborated on the development of Battlefield 2, which similarly featured more modern combat with contemporary vehicles and weaponry.

Some even maintain to this very day that Desert Combat remains the pinnacle of the series - a spirited evolution of the original concept before it got carried away trying to out-do Call of Duty.
