Older players who remember the slick, inviting action of No Mercy or the arcade sensibilities of titles like Shut Your Mouth and Here Comes The Pain may never get onboard with 2K's attempts to turn their series into a full-blown wrestling simulation.

Although pursuing super-realistic gameplay sounds good on paper, it hasn't exactly worked out in practice or made the games more fun. At least, it hasn't for series veterans.

2K could remedy this by expanding their current options for how matches play out. At the moment, it's possible to make bouts a short sprint through finishers that end in minutes, rather than 2K's preferred method of slowly building matches to a crescendo against a CPU reversal machine.

Maybe it's time to build on that with a total contrast between simulation and old-school modes.

By taking things one step further towards arcade speed (whilst also giving players who do like the current system the chance to play that way), 2K19 might feel more inviting to those who remember a faster pace to the gameplay.
