WWE Outlandish Theory: Goldberg To Be Inducted Into Hall Of Fame In 2017?
Is his presence in WWE 2K17 the start of a journey that ends at WrestleMania 33?
This past Monday on RAW, the #hatch was opened to reveal none other than the face of WWE 2K17, Goldberg.
The WCW legend was announced as a playable character in the game, as well as being a pre-order bonus, in order to drum up interest ahead of the release of the game on October 25th this year.
So Goldberg is a playable character in the game, so what? He's a recognisable name in professional wrestling, even with somewhat casual fans, so of course a legend of his stature will be used in such a position. This wouldn't be professional wrestling if it didn't include a whole host of speculation and fantasy booking, and the announcement of Goldberg here leads to plenty of both.
There is also something of a pattern when it comes to WWE video games and their marquee names. One of the big selling points for WWE 2K15 was the focus on The Ultimate Warrior, which set off a chain of events that ended with Warrior being inducted in the 2014 WWE Hall of Fame. Sting was also a playable character in that game for the first time, and by the end of the year he was finally in WWE.
Goldberg returning to World Wrestling Entertainment has been posited a number of times, but never has it seemed more likely than in the wake of this announcement. With ties between Goldberg and WWE obviously repaired, the man who went 173 matches undefeated in WCW could find himself as one of the marquee names to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2017.
Each passing year sees more of a World Championship Wrestling presence in the Hall. In 2016 Sting was inducted, 2015 saw Kevin Nash and Larry Zbyszko get their moment in the sun, will 2017 see arguably the company's greatest individual creation join them? The smart money says yes.
