9. Blender - You're Next (2011)

Home invasion horror You’re Next put director Adam Wingard on the map, roping in classic horror talent like Barbara Crampton, and riding the same masked misery wave that The Strangers came in on, and which The Purge would eventually run aground.

Erin (Sharni Vinson) and her boyfriend Crispian (A J Bowen), visit his family vacation home in rural Missouri for the wedding anniversary of his parents Aubrey and Paul (Crampton and Rob Moran), alongside various other siblings and significant others. While the years-worth of tension and awkwardness bubbling under the surface is painful enough to watch, soon things get literally agonising as a group of animal masked invaders descend on the house and start taking the family apart.

Erin turns out to be more resourceful than anyone expected, thanks to her youth spent in a survivalist compound (just go with it), and she soon turns the tables on their attackers. And this resourcefulness makes for frequently shocking, bloody and unpleasant viewing. Taking on Crispian’s brother Felix (Nicholas Tucci) – one of the architects and perpetrators of the attack – Erin uses the kitchen to her advantage. Ramming the blades of a blender into his skull, she plugs it in at the wall, and we watch Felix scream as his brain becomes the next thing on the menu.
