5. Box Cutter - Green Room (2015)

The dependable Jeremy Saulnier’s third feature, Green Room, arrived over a decade ago now, and managed to turn a real menace – North American skinhead neo-Nazis – into pure nightmare fuel.

The late, great Anton Yelchin delivers one of his best performances as Pat, bassist for punk group the Ain’t Rights, who find themselves performing a last-minute booking at a neo-Nazi clubhouse in the woods. After witnessing a skinhead gang member killing a woman, the band are trapped in the green room and have to fight their way out and find help before the Patrick Stewart-led gang can silence them for good.

While the skinheads use every weapon at their disposal, including machetes, pistols and dogs, one of the film’s deadliest and most persevering objects is the box cutter. Anyone who has every held a Stanley knife knows just how sharp the unassuming household tool is, and Green Room tests this several times.

Amber (Imogen Poots), friend to the murdered girl, turns against the Nazis and sides with the band, going the extra mile to help them survive, including taking charge of the box cutter they wrangle from skinhead bouncer Big Justin (Eric Edelstein) and using it to open him up the front like a zipper. But she's not done there: the Stanley comes back into play in the film's third act, when Amber cuts the throat of Red Lace neo-Nazi Kyle (Mason Knight) – proving the tool is not just for opening boxes, but making us wish it was.
