3. Microwave - The Last House on the Left (2009)

Little-known director Dennis Iliadis was given a reasonable budget ($15 million) and a handful of B-list stars to force Wes Craven’s notorious rape-revenge horror upon a new generation.

Sara Paxton and Martha MacIsaac play Mari Collingwood and Paige (the only main character with no surname), the teen girls who suffer the indecencies this time around, when they come face-to-face with escaped convict Krug Stillo (Garret Dillahunt) and his crew. Paige is stabbed to death, while Mari is raped, beaten and shot – yet somehow survives, making it to her parents’ lakeside house before the gang get there.

Despite being short of the shock factor that gave Craven’s original such impact, there are still a few grisly and disturbing moments, particularly once Mari’s parents go on the offensive. In Last House’s closing scene, which has ensured the film’s longevity, Dr Collingwood (Tony Goldwyn) has paralysed Krug from the neck down and rigged the family microwave to operate with the door open. How did a doctor come by such abilities? We don’t know. What we do know is the mess this makes of Krug’s cranium has put us off microwave food ever since.
