10 Great Horrors with TERRIBLE Premises
8. Therapy For A Vampire
Okay, a vampire asking for psychiatric help sounds funny... for a five-minute sketch. However, it's hard to imagine how this pitch could work in a feature-length film.
And yet, Therapy for a Vampire explores many facets of vampiric lore that other supernatural properties never touch upon. The dark comedy shows how repetitive a vampire's life can be after hundreds of years, especially when they have no job, children, or long-term goals. Therapy for a Vampire also delves into the bloodsuckers' love life and how tedious it is to have the same partner for half a millennium.
One tragic subplot centres around Countess Elsa, a vampire who can't remember what she looks like since she hasn't seen her reflection for centuries. When she commands an artist to paint her, they're both shocked to see the paintbrush refuse to make contact with the canvas. In that moment, Elsa is horrified to learn she'll never gaze upon her face again.
On top of that, Therapy for a Vampire is also very funny. (There's a great sequence where Elsa's husband, Geza, tries to look human by eating a steak in public, but just sucks the blood out of it.)
The parodical title will put some off but this horror-comedy is absolutely worth a watch.
