9. Grace Stewart - The Others

When a good twist is pulled off in a film, when an audience is left with their jaws on their floor from a perfectly executed reveal after a whole movie's worth of misdirection, it's so damn satisfying. The Others took this idea and upped the ante somewhat with a double twist of sorts.

In this 2001 picture, Nicole Kidman stars as Grace, a mother living with her two children and three housekeepers who turned up quite abruptly. After sensing and feeling another presence in the house, the reveal that the housekeepers were ghosts was a strong one, and the movie would have been a triumph had it stayed there.

However, with the audience's guard down after such a truth bomb came the perfect time for another. Unbeknownst to Grace or her kids, the housekeepers weren't the only spirits in the house. Instead, Grace and her children had also died, and what they thought were supernatural interlopers were actually the new tenants of the house trying to get rid of them.

It's a great twist that turns the haunted house premise completely on its head, and is played so well as to truly come out of nowhere. The circumstances of the family's death are equally haunting, making for a film not easily forgotten.
