6. Christian - Midsommar

This one is a slightly different entry now, as there is no supernatural element at play, no subconscious protection from the truth, or failing memory. Just a man being simply oblivious to how his true nature affected those around him.

The man in question is Christian, played by Jack Reynor in Ari Aster's Midsommar. He was a bad friend to Josh (William Jackson Harper), as he lazily stole his thesis idea in Sweden, and he was a bad boyfriend to Dani (Florence Pugh), but his actions went so much deeper in regard to how he treated the latter.

Mere weeks after Dani suffered the unthinkable tragedy of losing both her sister and her parents, Christian planned on heading to Sweden for a month without telling her, missing both her birthday and their anniversary, both of which he had forgotten about anyway.

Christian was emotionally manipulative, coaxing apologies from Dani when he was clearly in the wrong, and in the words of Pelle (Vilhelm Blomgren), he didn't make her feel held, yet he didn't ever seem to think he was a problem. It's no surprise that, with this toxic relationship, Dani ultimately chose her new family over Christian. Had he supported her even slightly, they wouldn't have gone to Sweden at all, and he would have lived.
