10 Horror Movie Monsters Who Encountered Something Way Worse

9. Mega Shark - Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus (2009)

It’s corny, it’s cheesy, and the graphics leave a lot to be desired, and yet Ace Hannah’s Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus is the cornerstone feature in a long series of budget, fan-favourite, straight-to-video monster movies.

The film sees (you guessed it) a very large, prehistoric shark (megalodon) released from a glacier in Alaska and go on the rampage. Usual and unusual shark antics abound (leaping out of the water and snatching a plane from the air, anyone?), with humanity – especially the US military – in hot pursuit. But, of course, while this behemoth of a shark seems to be the new apex predator of the seas, there is something, somehow, worse than it in the waters, released from the self-same glacier: the giant octopus.

The slippery SOB manages to fly under the radar for longer than his many-toothed cousin, taking down whales and drilling platforms on the fly, but eventually oceanographer Emma MacNeil (Debbie Gibson) hatches a plan to bring the two creatures together. And while natural assumptions are that the shark would trounce it, this turns out not to be the case, as once the octopus has it in its grip, nobody is getting out alive.
