10 Horror Movies That Suck So Bad You Can't Believe They Got Made
2. Exorcist II: The Heretic
American Psycho's follow-up might have been bad, but few horror sequels can measure up to the stench left by Exorcist II: The Heretic.
Four years after the original shook the film world to its very core, a second instalment in the story of Regan MacNeil was released for... some reason. Now a teenager, the possessed girl from the first film is still struggling to adjust to life when a priest arrives asking questions about the death of Father Merrin.
It should have been clear from the fact that William Peter Blatty (the writer of The Exorcist novel and its screenplay) and William Friedkin (the director) did not return for The Heretic, at the time believing that the story had been told and that a sequel was unnecessary. However, the film was made anyway, and the studio paid the price for not heeding these warnings.
Rumour has it that, during a screening of the film attended by Blatty, the audience began laughing as if they were watching a comedy. Another story goes that Warner Bros. executives were chased down the street by disappointed punters at the movie's first public showing.
Whether these tales are true or not, one thing that's for certain is that The Exorcist II sucks.
